Mainly images this post. They include a video from inside a Bird Box in our garden, some stills that I noticed when editing, and some lovely maps from CASA colleague Duncan Smith from a talk he gave earlier in the week. The YT video below shows a timelapse of activity from just over a month (end March to 1st May) showing 8 eggs laid and 5 chicks fledging. The end of the video shows the family of Great Tits taking their first flights as they leave the box.
The timelapse was created using a slightly convoluted process of slowly downloading the daily zip archives of all the images (1 photo taken every minute between 5am and 10pm), and then running them through a Python script to create the mp4 timelapse to use as input to DaVinci Resolve for editing. Below are some of my favorite stills observed when editing the timelapse.
Am pretty sure 8 eggs were laid.
First hatch 12 April - this was the first sign of chick.
Hungry Birds 21st April - lots of shots like this of open mouths!
Going for a wander 23rd April - was interesting to see how much the chicks would get out of the main nest hole and go for a walk around.
Still sleeping under mum 27th April
Fledge day 1st May 6am
Allotment is starting to come alive again, lots of bee activity in the Phacelia green manure. We were planting potatoes last weekend and netting the fruit bushes.
Some great screenshots from a great website by Duncan Smith via his talk at CASA on the ENHANCE project. A few more on Flickr:
